Synopsis

Bo, raised in a rural community, discovers her differences during puberty after a tragic accident, at least that’s what the audience will know. In high school, she had a rendezvous with her boyfriend and kills him during lovemaking, her first time for both when she was in high school. Her parents tell her she was adopted, adding to her self-loathing and shame. Bo runs away after learning she was adopted, which adds the final reason to escape. At the series’ start, Bo is a bartender, still on the run. She saves Kenzi from an attacker, revealing her powers. Kenzi, resourceful and from a Russian background, joins Bo. In the meantime, Bo draws the attention of the local Fae, learns she’s a succubus, and discovers the Light and Dark Fae. Choosing neutrality, she and Kenzi launch a detective agency, using Bo’s abilities to solve cases. Kenzi is quirky and awed at Bo’s abilities, though Bo, of course, pushes that aside; it is a death sentence for her to love anyone. Getting little favors, though, Bo has learned to do, and this is what Kenzi sees.

Positives
The characters are engaging, striking a good balance of danger, charm, and morality. Alongside this, the mysteries stay fresh, and the developing relationship between Bo and Kenzi remains compelling.
Negatives
Some supernatural settings, like Hell in Season 4, depicted as a grand hotel, initially felt somewhat fake. Over time, however, familiarity with the series helped these settings feel more natural, easing the transition from initial skepticism to acceptance.

Conclusions
The series is not for children: Bo’s romances span genders and include a female doctor and a male werewolf, among others. Kenzi and Hale’s relationship stands out for its sweetness and tragedy. Some monsters, especially Vex, a powerful Fae, bring effective suspense.
Despite the caveats, I recommend the series. Its dark themes reflect human nature, but its world feels apart from reality. Action and character development are well balanced, making most characters intriguing and sympathetic. Each episode offers engaging challenges, often with high stakes.
